Another stereoscopic image reproduction method is called parallax barrier technique. This method is based on the idea of showing different images on a display through a blocking barrier that has only one vertical slit open at a time. Each open slit has certain image shown through it. No glasses necessary for viewing stereoscopic image; the image is full color and could be computer generated.
This technique, however, reduces display resolution and results in a low light display since the parallax barrier blocks most of the light. The viewer has to be at a certain distance and the 3D effect is unstable. Another disadvantage is that the large size displays are very expensive.
Advantages:
- No glasses necessary
- Full color
- CG images
Limitations:
- Viewer has to be at a certain location
- 3D effect is unstable
- Large size displays are very expensive
Applications/Products
- 3D computer displays made by 4D Vision: not widely used
